Findings

Through my poll of questions, I discovered that all the women in this group have felt some type of discrimination from men because of their gender. Keep in mind that the findings from these interviews are all from men and women between the ages of 20-23, all college students. The women's experiences based on these interviews were all unfortunately similar. A quote from one of the girls I interviewed, age 22, depicts the majority opinion from all women who participated. “ever since I was a little girl, I always felt the men around me has such sexist views of women and as I've gotten older this has not changed,” (anonymous participant, 2023). Everyone women when asked if they have experienced the definition of mansplaining, they agree they have experienced it one or more times in their life. Once giving them the name of the definition more than half of them knew what the word meant.

When it came to the men’s interviews more than half of them shared the same answer when asked if they have felt discriminated against because of their gender and the answer was no. The few that said yes, referred to the interment trend that has been current on social media that states, “We hate all men”. Once asked the same question as the women, defining the word mansplaining and asking if they have experienced such a thing, all but 4/11 men said they have experienced such a thing. Then when asked if they knew the word mansplaining, the majority said yes and that it had been explained to them by a woman. My findings in these interviews concluded in the fact that women are far more aware of this societal issue than men. At the end of the interview, I asked both men and women if they had ever mansplained something to someone and the women majority was, maybe on accident and the men’s majority answer was no. This spoke volumes about the accountability and self-awareness that is associated with men and women.
