Develop and maintain healthy personal and/or professional relationships
Something I have always been passionate about is leadership. Starting from a young age I loved playing volleyball an then later in life I took up Lacrosse. I believe being apart of team is the most rewarding aspect of any job. Throughout my college career I got to take course like COM 463 Relational Communication that taught me how to be a team player. It also taught me how relationships are what drive us a humans, and connection is something we need to thrive. As a communications major ive grown so much since my first semester in college. I truly feel like ive gained so much knowledge not only in my field, but in life.
When I moved to Tuscaloosa I didn't know a single person. I transferred from Jefferson state Community college in Birmingham to attend The university Of Alabama for my Junior and Senior years. I applied for a job at a restaurant called Taco mama thinking it would pay the bills and I could meet hardworking people. Fast forward 3 years and I have not only met some of my closest friends but also have gotten promoted from Front of house member, to hourly manager, to now Assistant catering manager. The skills I acquired argumentation, and Human communication research helped me establish clear goals and create interpersonal relationships at my place of work. Alongside my job I make time for my work in the animal rescue world. I have always been very passionate about Animals and throughout my college career I have worked closely with a rescue close to my heart called Dixie Girl dog rescue. I spend time fostering dogs and training them so they have a higher chance of adoption. Nonverbal communication plays a huge role in how I work with animals. COM 250 is the class helped me understand how animals use nonverbal to show us what they need.
Leadership and Organizations
Diversity in a fast paced world
As a 22 year old in a world that is constantly evolving Ive had the privilege of meeting people from all walks a life. Something about college that you dont realize going into it is that thousands of people from all over the world will be in your classes, dorms, and everywhere. It is a chance to leave your homE town and see what the real world has to offer. My experience at the University of Alabama was nothing but pleasant experiences. I made friends from Chicago, Michigan, Idaho and even met people from England. Growing up in Alabama can feel so small but my perspective has changed for life. COM 413 Communication and Diversity is one of the classes that opened my eyes to the impact of diversity on communication. Going forward I feel educated in the barriers people face when it comes to communicating in different environment. As well as the importance of understand things such as Communication Accommodation Theory which discusses the way we can accommodate how someone may speak to someone from a diverse background. Grasping concepts like this put me in a unique position of understanding and empathy for truly listening and properly communicating to everyone.
